The pharmaceutical sector, as well as the chemical sector revolve around two macro issues namely certifications and chemical aggressions related to-for example-sanitization.

The implementation of applications for these sectors is often critical as not all materials comply with the required certifications. The reference certifications are normally food certifications (FDA and MOCA) since automatic machines, such as filling and dosing machines, often handle products that are ingestible and therefore must comply with the specific regulations on materials and objects in contact with food.

For the design of plastic components, such as bushings and guides, it is advisable to use certified materials, even when not in direct contact with the drug. In cosmetics the considerations are very similar, for the reference remains to food certifications.

ATP has been supplying major manufacturers of primary and secondary packaging machinery in the pharmaceutical industry for more than 45 years with materials that comply with FDA (21 CFR 177.2600) and EC 1935/2004 regulations for rubber in contact with food.

Among the elastomeric and technopolymer materials most commonly used for industry applications are silicones (including platinums) such as NBR and white EPDM, normally available in sheets cut by waterjet technology.

Also very wide is the range of turned rubbers such as Sintek FPM FDA, Sintek EPDM KT, W, Sintek HTPU, Sintek MVQ B.

In addition, ATP has a wide range of FDA and CE 10:2011 certified plastic materials including PEEK, POM and PPS.

The in-house production of semi-finished products made of PTFE (Teflon) filled with special fillers also allows our technicians to define for each application the most suitable compound according to the characteristics of the application and operating conditions (such as high temperature, high speed, high pressure, low friction, etc…). PTFE allows high resistance to chemical agents, characteristic of sanitizing, hygienizing and sterilizing processes.

All materials used in the development of applications for the pharmaceutical industry meet the most stringent requirements in terms of hygienic design, certification and traceability of production batches.

Thermal, Chemical and Traceability Resistance

ATP seals and solutions for the pharmaceutical industry are resistant to high and low temperatures, abrasion and a wide range of aggressive chemicals used in CIP sanitization and SIP sterilization processes. All applications are also managed to ensure complete traceability of components. In addition to classic geometries such as orings (ORs) and oil seals (o-rings) ATP handles various solutions such as metering pistons for filling machines, ultra-clean hygienic solutions, PTFE gaskets with stainless steel springs, and lip seals for linear (with reciprocating motion) or rotary (such as multi-product joints) sealing systems.

The profiles of seals used in the food industry and in particular that of the ultraclean piston make it possible to prevent stagnation of food fluids by reducing the formation of bacterial charges in the seal housing area.

The added value of FEM analysis

Thanks to studies carried out including through the use of FEM analysis, our R&D center has developed an innovative solution (ATP patent) for rotary and linear seals, the self-adaptive seal.
Developed for linear applications up to 20 bar, it is characterized by automatic eccentricity compensation, high performance and long service life. The self-adaptive seal can be used in many other applications with great effectiveness (sealing capacity) and efficiency (seal life).

Low-Friction Pharmaceutical Seals

Often in pharmaceutical plants, the ability to use low-friction seals is an important added value. ATP.
Among the most widely used solutions in the food industry are bellows and diaphragms made of SINTEK V1AL 001177, a material characterized by high chemical and thermal resistance, which enables the achievement of higher performance than conventional PTFE and a longer service life for applications.
