Alternative seal for pneumatic actuators in the aerospace industry

Scenario

The technological progress characterizing the aerospace industry has led to the need for the creation of a pneumatic actuator capable of meeting specific sealing and durability requirements.

Challenge

A renowned client in the aerospace industry asked us to study and realize a sealing system for a new pneumatic actuator. The main challenge was that it had to operate with high-frequency cycling and a short stroke but without the possibility of implementing a guidance system, due to space restrictions.

Solution

To overcome this challenge, we have actively engaged our technical department for an in-depth analysis of the system. During this phase, we carefully assessed the available materials to ensure the required performance, including thermal ones (ranging from -50°C to +100°C.). After all the evaluations our team has suggested the use of SINTEK HTPU LT PLUS, a material characterized by thermal resistance ranging from -55°C to +110°C.

This choice was based not only on SINTEK HTPU LT PLUS’ ability to adapt to the required temperature range but also on its thermoplastic nature, which provides an elastic modulus that ensures sealing without requiring additional energizing elements. Furthermore, this material exhibits significant abrasion resistance, a key element for aerospace applications.

This supply was accompanied by 3.1 and FAI certificates, as requested by the customer.

Testimony

Despite the highly critical operating conditions of high pressure and speed, the proposed solution performed satisfactorily.
