New EU rules for food contact plastics: ll the materials used by ATP in the food and pharmaceutical sectors conform to amendment 15 to EU Directive / and regulations.

On 22 September last, #Regulation EU 1245/2020 came into force, which is known as amendment 15 to 10/2011 and substantially amends the requirements governing certified food contact materials or FCMs.

What has changed?

The new regulation has impacted the conformity of the Global Migration tests and specifications for food contact products. In particular, new test methods and simulations (OM0 and OM6) and new limits for the presence of As/Cd/Co/Pb and PAA have been introduced. From 22/09/2022, materials subjected to migration tests according to the old analysis methods cannot therefore be considered to be conformant and can no longer be marketed.

In addition: the regulation also requires the manufacturer to:

  • report the presence of genotoxic substances (if known)
  • run migration tests three times on the same sample -if necessary, as with ATP used repeatedly, make sure that migrations in chronological order do not have a higher numeric value than the previous migrations, i.e. <<.
  •

Between June and September 2022, ATP ran a migration test campaign on all the plastics used to check conformity to the new requirements to ensure that the plastics conformed to Directive EU 1245/2020.

In order to ensure maximum food safety to its customers and the market, the company has decided to seize the opportunity to run the migration tests voluntarily also on the categories specified in of the FDA standard (for each chemical family).

All the materials used by ATP resulted conform to the above regulation  and therefore to EC 1935/2004, and to the US FDA. This is a vindication of the company’s commitment to quality and safety.
